Top of pageWhat is Fairly Local?

Fairly Local is essentially a Fairtrade search engine for people who want to find Fairtrade products in their localities. They can simply enter their postcode and the website will return all its stores, cafes and products within a selected range of kilometres. Alternatively, if they were looking for a particular product they can search the range of products on the website and find the nearest store from a given postcode for that particular products.

Fairly Local is a website that allows people who are passionate about ethical consumerism to share their knowledge with others by listings the stores and products they buy from or know sell Fairtrade products.

Where does this information come from?

All the listing information on Fairly Local comes from the Australian consumer community, from those people who know where to buy Fairtrade products in their neighbourhood and want to share their knowledge with others. This means the website is constantly growing, and as it grows more and more of the Australian public will be reached and be able to find information on where to buy Fairtrade products from their own backyard.

Who runs Fairly Local?

Fairly Local is run by the community, that's you. Without the contributions of the community, it would just be an empty shell of no use to anyone. It was developed and is maintained by a young activist from Sydney, with a passion for Fairtrade, and so is not run by the Fairtrade Association of Australia and New Zealand, nor is it run by any Aid Organisations or Non-Government Organisations (NGOs). However, organisations such as FTAANZ and World Vision have partnered with Fairly Local to resource it and promote its presence so as to make it more useful to the wider Australian community.

Top of pageWhat is Fairtrade?

The FAIRTRADE labelFairtrade is a certifying body that ensures farmers and producers in developing countries a fair price (the Fairtrade Price) for their produce, helping protect them from damaging fluctuations in world market prices. They also receive an additional sum of money (the Fairtrade Premium) for investment in social, economic and environmental development in their community, such as educational and medical facilities. Fairtrade Certification standards also prohibit the use of forced and abusive child labour.

By choosing products carrying the FAIRTRADE Label, consumers can support farmers, their families and communities in receiving more stable and secure incomes, better working conditions, and enhanced investment in quality and local environmental sustainability.

For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Label it must meet international Fairtrade standards which are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO). These standards are agreed through a process of research and consultation with key participants in the Fairtrade scheme, including producers themselves, traders, NGOs, academic institutions and labelling organisations such as the Fairtrade Association ANZ.

Fairtrade Certification and Labelling is undertaken by a worldwide network of non-government organisations pursuing Fairtrade through the certification and labelling of products, such as coffee, tea and chocolate. A product is Fairtrade Certified if it carries the FAIRTRADE Label, providing an easy way for consumers to recognise and choose products that meet agreed environmental, labour and developmental standards.
